Chapter Five

Twenty-four hours passed at a snail’s pace, and Noah had been ready to pull his hair out when Tate stepped into his office.

Sitting up straight with anticipation, he asked, “So, what did he say?”

Tate’s face remained passive as he neared Noah’s desk. “He said no.” His friend plopped down in a chair in front of his desk with a sigh. “Man, what did you do? The second I mentioned your name, he got an irritated look on his face.”

Noah leaned back in his chair and groaned. “I lied to you yesterday on the phone when you called. He was actually with me then, and he wasn’t happy that I’d told you differently.”

“Oh, okay, this is making sense now.”

Noah looked questioningly at his friend. “How’s that?”

Frowning, Tate replied, “It’s not really my place to say. I don’t think he’d be happy with me talking to you about his private life.”

That wasn’t good enough for Noah. Shea had quickly come to mean something to him, and he wanted to know. “Tate, please. I just want to make it better. I promise I won’t tell him you said anything.”

Tate seemed to ponder over it for a bit, but finally said, “Okay. So, a few years back Shea was in a relationship. It had become pretty serious. Shea had fallen in love with this guy, Todd, but Todd was in the closet. Shea had wanted for them to be together in every way—live together and whatnot—and when he expressed this to Todd, the man brushed him off like he was nothing. Shea took it pretty hard. He told me that he’d never be in another relationship like that again.”

But he and Shea weren’t in a relationship. They’d just met, for fuck’s sake. Noah didn’t want to come out for some guy he wasn’t even sure of yet, and he needed for Shea to see where he was coming from. His career was on the line. He didn’t want to give up, though. He wanted to see what could happen between them. There were so many things that he wanted to explore now, and he wanted to do them with Shea. He had to make the guy give him a chance.

Sitting forward in his chair, he gave Tate a pleading look, “Man, please, you’ve got to… What?”

Tate sat there shaking his head. “No, Noah, I know what you’re going to say and I can’t. I have to respect Shea’s wishes, and he doesn’t want to talk to you. So please…just don’t. You’re both my friends, so I’m not betraying one of you for the other.” Tate stood and headed for the door. “I’m actually kind of sorry I tried getting you two together.”

“I’m not,” Noah mumbled.

Tate paused with his hand on the doorknob. He looked back to Noah and stared at him for a bit. “You swear you won’t hurt him? I know he’s a big guy and all, but the man’s a softie at heart.”

Noah couldn’t promise his friend he wouldn’t, because he didn’t know what would happen between them, but he could say, “I have no intentions of it.
