“AH, YOU know, kid, I could get used to this.” Nino slipped out of his jacket and loosened his tie. “Although I think all this good country living is eventually gonna show up on my waist, you know what I mean?” He patted his stomach ruefully, stretched his legs in front of him, and laid his head against the back of the sofa.

“Never,” Stanley said. He took off his jacket and waistcoat and sat next to Nino. The front room was deliciously cool and shaded from the midafternoon sun. “You made quite an impression. They’ll be talking about you for months.” Nino opened his arms and Stanley went into them. “Make that years.”

“Aw, you’re flattering me now.” Nino sighed blissfully. He went quiet as Stanley leaned close and kissed him. “Oh, baby,” he said, “I think I know the perfect way for us to work off that picnic lunch….” He returned the kiss, holding Stanley’s face between his palms as he deepened the caress. The younger man groaned and pulled Nino closer, wrapped one leg around his waist.

“I’m sorry. I don’t mean to interrupt, but—”

Nino leapt away from Stanley as if he’d been electrocuted. “What the hell are you doin’?” he snapped. “Just walkin’ in here like you own the goddamn place? You’re lucky I didn’t pull a gat on you!”

“Wallace.” Stanley wiped his mouth in the back of his hand, a hand that trembled. “It isn’t what it looks like.”

“Yes,” the elder Zadwadzki said, “it is. And we need to talk.” He walked several short, choppy steps back and forth, then folded himself down into the easy chair. “This has to be said.”

“Now, see here—” Nino started up, but was gently stayed by Stanley.

“No, Nino,” Stanley said, “Let him finish.”

Wallace stared at them. “I don’t know what to do!” He was on his feet again, walking. He went to the large window that overlooked the garden and stood gazing out for a moment. “When you wired to say you were coming, I wasn’t sure… I didn’t know if I wanted you here. We never were close—”

Stanley protested. “That’s not entirely true.”

Wallace waved him off. “Listen—please. Just… just listen.” He drew a shuddering breath and turned to face them. The afternoon sun haloed his head and shoulders, picking up the early gray in his hair. “We never were close, not like cousins are, but I knew… I knew you were… different. Like me.”

Nino got up and went to where Wallace was. “You don’t like dames,” he said. “Is that what I’m hearing, or are you just giving me static?”

Wallace nodded miserably. “I… figured I could go for years… maybe… you know, I can’t be the only one who….” He gaze beseeched them. “Men like this… they live their lives… I could have hobbies and maybe I wouldn’t….” He buried his face in his hands.

“You’re in a bad way, Kansas.” Nino reached up and laid a hand on the taller man’s shoulder. “You really got yourself tied up in knots, ain’t ya?”

“I had hoped… I mean, when I saw you guys getting off the train I thought maybe….
