LEAN TIME LESSONS

I am frequently asked how businesses should react to a downturn in the economy and how they can prepare for uncertain times ahead. My first response is to say, “I have no idea.” However, I then offer to share my experiences as a business owner in difficult economic times. That is the beauty – and the frustration – of being a business owner: there may be multiple correct answers and multiple approaches to any given business question.

When you combine high unemployment, uncertainty over taxes, the bite of higher gas prices and the lack of any firm direction on economic policy, it’s not surprising that business owners are unsettled about the future. And I’ve found that when business owners become uncertain about the future, they go into “pause mode,” waiting to see what will happen next.
