3.3 Believe in Your Dreams!
All our dreams can come true,
if we have the courage to pursue them.
—Walt Disney
In my opinion, the fairly typically American quote from Walt Disney above has a serious meaning, one that I have experienced more than once. If we believe in our dreams, they will come true. We have to take action, of course, and should never give up. Our dreams are our goals, which will never be attained unless we do something in order to achieve them. You need perseverance and will to make your dreams come true. A Taoist poem comes to mind: “Don’t rush and don’t hasten—everything in its own time.”
It’s been almost twenty years since I became acquainted with a unique entrepreneur. He was past his prime by then. He proudly showed me the products of his company at this first meeting. Product samples, award certificates, acknowledgments—the foyer of his office was a little museum. Still under the spell of my university years, I could only see the future in terms of computers. Yet he was talking to me about something completely different: hip-replacement prosthetics. “This is incomparable in Hungary,” he said, “and a local development.” Later, he asked, “A daring undertaking, isn’t it?”
He took me on a tour of the factory—there were about fifty people working there at the time—and he told me his story. He had started fifteen years earlier as a car mechanic but had always dreamed about making implants. He read about them, tried things out, looked for connections, and after some years of hard work, his first products were born. These were followed by new ways of doing things. Products became product families, several being patented, and there were life-improving advancements. Phenomenal results were achieved that might have seemed unattainable at the beginning. His dream came true because it was paired with a strong will, faith, perseverance, and a professional humility. All of these helped him overcome the obstacles.
When a hip joint becomes unhealthy, it causes great pain and restricted movement. The cure lies in an operation: doctors replace the damaged joint with a prosthesis. My acquaintance learned everything possible about this malady, analyzed all firms producing hip-replacement prostheses, and also studied related solutions and production technologies. He threw himself into making his dream come true. It was a complete change of career path, and with no ordinary challenge! He began his own development, and success was soon to follow as mass production began.
By the time we’d walked through the factory, I was completely captivated by his enthusiasm as he talked about the products and new developments. The production technology was based on the most modern computer-operated machinery. I saw at least as many new products as the number of new ideas and new directions he told me of. I felt as if I was in a research laboratory. I was looking for a job at the time, but we had merely met on the off chance. Of course, we also referred to this during our conversation.
“Would you like to work for me?” he asked.
