The building’s design called for a low, streamlined, late-modern style, with the southern part in a rectangular shape. The northern side would be more curved, with an upper-level, open terrace. The natural grade of the ground, as well as the preexisting suburban neighborhood, lent themselves to this design. The middle exterior level, mostly visible from the street, would be clad in Pennsylvania fieldstone. The stone was laid by Eastern stonemasons to give it a rough, natural look.

Bullock’s Pasadena would have more landscaping than any previous Bullock’s store. Its suburban setting and the company’s commitment to reflect the indoor-outdoor California lifestyle required the grounds to be well planned and maintained. Pasadena landscape architect Ruth Shellhorn was hired to create a tropical theme. Knowledgeable of the local climate, she carefully selected trees, shrubs, and flowers appropriate for the setting. The placement and size of the trees were such so as to not overwhelm the scale of the building’s architecture. Different varieties of palms, lemon gum, and eucalyptus trees provided height and framing. Red hibiscus, used sparingly, added stimulating color, with Carolina jasmine producing a winter gold. Low, sweeping ground covers of ivy and star jasmine provided a textural element to the overall scheme.
