Those passengers seated in the upper deck had been able to witness the consternation at the cockpit door, and now the word had passed throughout the rest of the plane. Hushed conversations took place, and the atmosphere was fraught. Milton left Thorsson at the door while he descended the stairs to go and get Huxley. The flight attendant who served the lower deck was in the foyer, pale faced.
âWhatâs going on?â
Milton took her to the side. âThe pilotâs locked himself in the cockpit.â
Her mouth fell open. âGod.â
âYou need to keep everyone calm.â
âWhyâs he done something like that?â
âListen,â Milton said firmly. âItâs Genevieve, isnât it?â
âYes.â
âYou need to do your job, Genevieve. Make sure the passengers donât panic. Iâm going to get it sorted, but itâll be more difficult if everyoneâs excited. Do you understand?â
âWhat do I tell them?â
âThereâs been a malfunction,â he said, âand weâre fixing it now. All right?â
She nodded.
Milton gestured to the door to Huxleyâs suite. âI need to see him. Is the door open?â
âYes,â she said, âbut heâs not alone.â
He was going to ask her to elaborate, but he remembered seeing the two young women follow him inside earlier. Genevieveâs shrug and the little shake of her head told him all he needed to know.
Milton knocked on the door. âItâs John. Can I come in?â
He heard muffled conversation from inside.
âTristan,â Milton said, âI need to speak to you.â
It took another few seconds before the door was unlocked and opened. Huxley peered out from behind it, wearing a dressing gown with a monogram of his initials on the breast. Milton glanced over his shoulder to see two young women sitting up in bed, the sheets pulled up to their necks.
Huxley noticed Miltonâs eyes and stepped forward, pulling the door closed behind him. âWhat is it?â
âThereâs a problem. The pilotâs locked himself in the cockpit and changed course. We should be on a northwestern track. Weâre heading northeast.â
âHeading where?â He paused, working out where the new course might lead. âJesus. Pakistan?â
âThatâs what Iâm worried about.â
The colour drained out of Huxleyâs face. âOh, shit.â
