Maybe the best way to approach youth ministry programming is to lay aside all of our concerns about how big, how cool, how clean, and how active our programs are, and begin with a simple statement made by Jesus: A tree is known by its fruit (Luke 6:44; also see Matthew 7:16-20).

Jesus didn’t say a tree would be known by—

the variety of its fruit (The Smorgasbord Approach),

whether a lot of folks showed up to admire the tree (The Bright Light Approach),

how many people sat under the tree (The Bigger Is Better Approach), or

whether or not the leaves ever needed raking (The No News Is Good News Approach).
