How to Get Rid of a Sub-Contractor
If a sub-contractor’s work proves unsatisfactory, or they persistently fail to turn up, have a quiet word to find out why. Tea breaks, especially if you provide the tea, are useful for chats of this kind.
If the situation doesn’t improve, or the subbie takes it amiss, it’s important for the good of the project, and your own peace of mind, to act quickly. Subbies aren’t fired; they are ‘finished’. This should happen immediately, with work paid up to date – either for the day, the week or the agreed payment stage (unless it’s only just started) – and preferably in cash, so there’s no uncertainty about cheques being honoured.
The sub-contractor concerned should then leave the site with any tools or equipment belonging to him.
Why?
You really don’t want to risk a disgruntled ex-employee returning and spreading disaffection or, worse, carrying out sabotage. It’s not unknown for drains to block mysteriously after an aggrieved groundworker has returned after working hours. Some pieces of ingenious mischief may take months, or even years, to reveal themselves.
The prospect of finishing a burly sub-contractor isn’t a particularly pleasant one, but if it’s done quickly and fairly, and without losing your temper, it’s only going to enhance your reputation as a competent manager.
On the other hand, if you and sub-contractor have a serious falling out – and it’s not mended quickly – chances are they will simply fail to turn up the next day.
In practice, the main issue in ‘finishing’ a subcontractor is finding a replacement. Sub-contractors are generally reluctant to take over someone else’s work because they assume it’s been unsatisfactory, which means they will probably have to spend time correcting it and they may still get blamed for their predecessor’s mistakes. Or they suspect the first subbie may have discovered a problem, which they’ve neglected to mention to you.
