Chapter 12 – Hollyn

Clapping my hands over my ears, I shuffled backwards from the barrier. Glaring at the sky for no particular reason, I tried to think over the shrill shrieking of the magical alarm. I pictured Thane’s handsome face. His fiery orange eyes. His full lips. As I pictured him, his brothers came to mind as well.

For others, only their expressions and eye color separated them. But I knew each of them by scent. By touch. By taste.

My mind cleared and I saw that bright constellation in my mind. Our constellation. The grouping of stars that drifted across the sky of my mind no matter the time of day.

I backed up a couple more steps. The alarm cut off mid shriek. I sighed at the blessed silence. If Merlin, Ari, and the rest of everyone else thought I was strong enough to harness the energy of the sun, then there must be something to the idea.

Hell, even Merlin had said I could escape from here. That Patrick wouldn’t be able to hold me. If there was even a smidgen of truth to that, then I needed to embrace the idea that I could blow this place wide open.

A rustling in the woods behind me drew my attention. Looking around for an escape route, I scooted up a tree and kept climbing until I could see for miles in each direction. I wrapped my legs around a sturdy branch just as Filipe and a group of men tromped through the woods and underbrush with all the finesse of a herd of elephants.

“The Master said she’s around here. That’s where the alarm went off. Spread out.” Filipe flung a hand in each direction. It made him look like he was trying to dance half-heartedly.

If I had to guess, he was still a little put out with me that I’d turned his non-girlfriend into a puddle of Lucy-goo. I shrugged. Not my fault he had horrible taste in women.

The small group of men spread out in every direction. They called my name as if I were a small scared kitten they were trying to coax to come home.

“Hollyn. Here Hollyn, Hollyn. Come here, Hollyn.”

My gorge and hate rose in direct proportion to their saccharine tones. As if I could trust them to take care of me like a small kitten. I’d been even more helpless than that. At least she had claws. As I child, I hadn’t even known I had claws, let alone how to use them in protecting myself.

The rage heated my core. Burned me from the inside out. I called a dollop of power to my hands. Zeroing in on the closest man, I formed that hate, that power. My rage iced over as I shot it from my hand. “Cultrum glacies,” I said softly as the ice knife sliced through the air.

It landed with a precision I still doubted even though I watched it hit. It carved through the man’s neck like an oar through water. He fell without a sound.
