TRANSFORMING THE TERMS OF DEBATE
Beyond the morality of the matter as motivation to act, there are also significant strategic reasons to pursue an economic justice agenda. Contemplating and addressing the question “What is justice?” will give force and momentum to a compelling contemporary public policy agenda that can get Democrats and progressives off the defensive and frame future fights over the country’s priorities. The notion of justice is so deeply embedded in the American value system that forty-five states have laws requiring students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, which, of course, ends with the words “and justice for all.”28 But what does justice for all really look like?
Much of modern public policy is based on two profound myths: that America is a land of equal opportunity and that poverty is largely due to personal failing. Both undergird and constrain the current public policy debate. Challenging these myths by raising disruptive questions can turn the tables on the policy dialogue and expand the sense of what’s possible to help move America closer to our professed values.
