In the distance, Reaper heard the snowmobiles roar, but he wasn’t slowing. He also wasn’t sure the machines could follow him because of fallen branches and the fact that, so far, Tyson was sticking to the forest.

But then the trail meandered east. Into flatter terrain of cleared fields.

The path was slower going for the horse now that they moved through three feet of loose snow, but he pressed him forward, keeping as close to the tracks as he could.

After about ten minutes, he caught sight of the black mare and Tyson’s gangly frame. Tyson’s trail curved strangely. Maybe he’d changed his mind about heading back into the trees. His mistake brought Reaper closer.

“Ha!” He shouted at the horse, and he struck out through the fresh powder, heading in a straight line toward Tyson, who turned in his saddle.

The fugitive reined around his horse, and then stood in his stirrups and waved. The sound of laughter echoed in the air.

Seeing red, Reaper cursed. Crazy fucking bastard.

And then he heard it—a horrible noise—and instantly knew why Tyson had laughed. His entire body tensed.

A groan sounded beneath the horse. His hooves were no longer muffled by dirt beneath the crunchy snow. Reaper shot a glance around him and realized the area where they stood was too flat to be earth at all. His gut tightened.

In the next moment, the ice broke. The horse began falling backward. Reaper kicked free of his stirrups, but his action was too late. He plunged into ice-cold water. The horse bumped against him. Then a hoof caught him in the side. His air expelled in a single harsh gust, and Reaper knew he was a dead man.
