Chapter Fourteen
MARK
Quiet sobbing, followed by someone punching me in my side, wakes me from my heavy sleep. I open my eyes to Alicia shaking, her body pressed to mine. Her little fists punch my chest, but it doesnât hurt. Silent sobs come from her open mouth
âAlicia,â I call, but sheâs asleep, trapped deep in her nightmare. âAlicia, itâs just a dream. Wake up.â I shake her carefully, but she doesnât wake up. I call louder. âAlicia!â
Her eyes fly open, lost in time and space. Sheâs still there, whenever she was trapped, and I have a pretty fucking good idea which moment she was reliving.
âAlicia, itâs me.â I repeat myself, hoping sheâll hear me. âYour friendly neighborhood firefighter.â That seems to bring her back, and her eyes finally focus on my face.
âSorry,â she says, her voice gruff as she wipes sweat away from her forehead. âIâm sorry. I hate when that happens.â
âDoes it happen a lot?â My own voice comes out as a groan, and I fear sheâll get scared again, but it doesnât happen. Instead, she presses her body to mine, looking for warmth and nearness.
âLess and less.â She sniffles. âThanks, I donât remember the last time I wasnât alone in that.â
I donât want to respond. What can I say? Iâd only get angry. At the assholes who did that. At her family who canât help her, leaving her alone with her demons. At everyone.
âThank you, Mark.â
âDo you want to talk about it?â I bring my arm around her shoulders and pull her closer. It seems like her demons checked out for a moment. She doesnât jump back in fear when I touch her. And God knows I need to touch her right now, to make sure sheâs okay. Somehow, I feel like Iâm the one reliving her nightmares.
âNo.â She shakes her head against my side. âI just want to lie down here. With you, if itâs okay.â
âItâs okay.â I tug her closer to me, enjoying the feel of her soft body next to mine. I just wish we didnât have these itchy clothes between us.
I mentally smack myself for being a creep. But to be fair, the clothes we wear so we donât freeze to death are itchy.
Her labored breathing slows down eventually, and I think she fell asleep when her quiet voice startles me.
âI havenât kissed anyone in years, and I mean itâyears.â She stresses the word as my breath hitches. Did I just hear her right? âI couldnât. I didnât want to.â I hear her rough swallow. âDo you think you could kiss me?â
My throat goes dry, and I can barely force out a single word. âAliciaâ is all I can manage.
âSorry! Gosh, Iâm so sorry.â She scatters away from me, and I donât stop her. âIâm sorry, Mark. I didnât mean to make you uncomfortable, and yet here I am, draped all over you. You probably have a girlfriend, and I donât even know.â She hides her face in her hands. âGosh, itâs embarrassing.â She muffles into her palms.
