TWENTY-TWO

Darren

I don’t know how I ended up on Blossom’s doorstep yesterday. I knew they were headed to Boston and, for some reason, I couldn’t handle the thought of her slipping through my fingers. It wasn’t fair to my brother, but my relationship with Blossom runs deeper than him meeting her two seconds ago. It felt as if a switch had been flicked inside me. This was my do or die. I could sit back and watch Quinn and Blossom possibly fall in love, or I could get over my issues and take one step forward. I decided to take that step. It wasn’t easy, but being close to Blossom is and what I feel for her is so real it’s overpowering.

Quinn walks into the kitchen from outside, breathing hard. “Well, someone’s in a good mood.” He chugs his bottle of water.

I pause my whistling.

“Can I make you some breakfast?” I ask my brother.

“Definitely,” he says.

I get to work cracking eggs and slicing up some peppers to add to an omelet. Then I head to the fridge and get some turkey bacon. I place it in the toaster oven.

Aunt Rivi walks in next. “Hmm, smells good in here.”

“I can make you breakfast too,” I offer.

“I’ll take you up on that,” she says, and she heads over to the coffee pot to pour herself some coffee. Then she takes a seat at the kitchen table.

I get to work adding more eggs into the omelet.

“How did your day go yesterday?” Aunt Rivi asks. She knows I went over to Blossom’s yesterday because she caught me at the door and asked me where I was going. Since I never lie to my aunt, I told her my plan. I was met with a victorious grin. I told her it wasn’t like that, but she just said “aha” and went on her way.

“It was fine,” I say dryly. I’d rather not talk about Blossom in front of my brother. I don’t exactly know where those two stand, which is why I didn’t kiss her yesterday, even though I was dying too.

“Just fine?” Aunt Rivi inquires, raising her right brow.

“Yeah.”

“What is going on? What did you do yesterday?” Quinn looks between me and Aunt Rivi with his hands on his waist.

Shit.

“I went into Boston,” I say, flipping the omelet.

“With Blossom?” Quinn asks, sounding surprised.

“I just offered her and Rebel a ride. Her sister worked for me for years. Those two have had it hard. I didn’t want them heading out there to face their mom on their own,” I explain.

“I didn’t realize you and Blossom were that close,” Quinn says.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Aunt Rivi thread her fingers together as she places her elbows on the table and rests her chin on her interlaced fingers. She knows exactly what she is doing.

“We aren’t. Like I said, I’ve known Rebel a long time and offered them a ride.” Even though I don’t like lying to Aunt Rivi, Quinn is an entirely different story.
