Chapter Eleven

I lean my head against the door once he's gone. The night had started out so beautifully, and now. Well, now I was standing next to the door while tears slowly rolled down my cheeks. I'm thankful at least that the girl at the makeup counter suggested waterproof mascara and that I don't have black streaks down my face.

I wipe my face with the back of my hand as I climb the stairs to my room. At least my dad isn't home. The last thing I want to do right now is re-live the night with him. Although he would probably be grateful that he wouldn't have to worry about me dating anyone for a while.

I reach the top of the stairs when I hear the front door swing open. I start to run to my room to avoid my dad, but his voice stops me.

"Leven!" he yells out in a panic. "Leven, where are you?"

"Up here, Dad. I'm going to bed." Please don't let him come up here. I really want to disappear into my room. I don't get the chance though. My dad appears at the foot of the stairs, a look of relief across his face. "I..." I start out, but he interrupts me.

"Where is he?" he yells out. I stare at him for a minute, confused by the question.

"Where is who?" Is he talking about Calloway? Does he know what happened? Was he spying on me?

“You know who. Calloway. Where is he?” He's climbing the stairs two at a time, reaching the top in a matter of seconds. He's right in front of me now, grabbing both of my arms and lowering his face, so he's eye level with me. "Leven, tell me where he is. Now." He's scaring me. My dad has never acted like this before.

"He went home," I say while trying to hide my tear-streaked face. "I don't want to talk about him right now, okay?" I don't want to talk about him ever.

"What do you know about him?" He's squeezing my arms now.

"What? Why?" What does he know? Did he see him leave? Teleport out of here with Memphis?

"Just tell me what you know. Now!"

I swallow hard. I can't come up with a lie, not while he's acting like this. And lying wouldn't do me any good right now anyway. He knows something.

The knock at the door breaks his eyes from mine, and I use the moment to wriggle out of his grasp and run down the stairs. I fling the door open and find Calloway standing on the porch.

"Leven! I need to talk to you!" He's breathless, like he's been running.

"Now isn't a good time." I start to shut the door, hoping my dad doesn't hear him, but Calloway puts his foot out to stop it.

"Leven, it's important. Please," he says, pushing the door back open and walking in.

"Is that him? Is that Calloway?" my dad yells out as he stomps down the stairs and towards the door. "You stay
