Tate

Closing the tube of mascara, I pull out my lip gloss, applying a layer. Smacking my lips together, I give myself one last look in the mirror. I look decent. What more could I ask for than that?

I’m not a supermodel, but for a frat party, it’ll do.

I curled my shoulder-length hair and then combed through it. Turning it into soft, big waves. Despite Link hating the color of it now, I love it. It’s somewhere between brown and blonde, giving me the change I needed. For once, I took my time doing my makeup. And by taking my time, I mean, I put on mascara, eyeliner, and lip gloss. And for my outfit, I dusted off my black crop top, pairing it with straight jeans and Nikes. Because this is a frat party, and my ass might need to run home if there’re any creeps there. Or mean girls. I could run from them too.

“What am I even doing?” I whisper to myself. “Why am I pretending I want to go be social?”

I don’t know what I think I’m gaining by going out tonight. But both Holly and Oliver texted me this morning, asking if I was coming. So, I guess I feel like I should. And this is college. I should be out, making friends. Not holed up at home. Besides, it’s the weekend. I’m sure Brody and Link will both be off with God knows who.

As I head down the stairs, a shirtless Brody pulls his attention from the TV and turns to look at me.

“Damn, Tater Tot. You showin’ some skin tonight?” He gives me a cheesy wink. “I approve. Oh, and by the way, I am digging the new hair. You’re giving me Sarah Cameron vibes. And you know how I feel about her.”

Brody and I binge-watched Outer Banks in a matter of days. It was hard to stop once we started. And he wasn’t lying. He is obsessed with Sarah.

I giggle, feeling my cheeks burn. “Thanks. I’m trying something new.”

“I like it,” he says with a grin. “Where are you headed?”

“My friend Holly is picking me up. We’re headed to a party.”

His smile dies a little. “Where at?”

“It’s at Oliver’s fraternity house. You remember Oliver from the Astronomy Center?”

“Yeah, I do. But maybe I should go. I like Oliver, but some of those dudes he lives with … well, I’ve heard things. I don’t really like the thought of you being there alone.”

“Good thing I won’t be alone,” I remind him. “Oliver and Holly will both be there. And I’m sure dozens of other college kids. I’ll be safe.”

He doesn’t look convinced, but he nods. “Call if you need me. I’m serious, Tate.”

“Yes, Dad,” I say and start toward the door. “I’m kidding. I will, I promise. I’ll probably stay an hour, tops, and need a lift anyway.”

“Tate,” Link’s voice says from behind me, coming out of nowhere, like always, “where are you going?”

“To a party at Oliver’s frat house,” I snap. “Because, you know … I’m in college.
