May 1695

While Jack and I spoke, there had been a soft murmuring from outside my window, which I had taken to be the sea. Then it grew louder and I recognised it for voices - raised voices - and many feet marching towards the house.

Jack became still, listening intently.

“Soldiers,” I said, hardly daring to breathe.

“Not soldiers,” he said. “They have come too quickly. It is the Earl’s own men.”

“Why would they come to the house at night?”

Jack smiled ruefully.

“They have come for you?” I felt a chill strike my body. “You must hide!”

It was plain that Jack, as a stranger to the village, did not appreciate the danger he was in, for all he did was laugh.

Then we heard it - the relentless crash of a heavy fist on the door and a rough voice shouting the very words I feared:

“Open up! Open up now, or it will be the worse for you!”
