He’d left Kit at his doorstep, with one goodnight kiss.

“You’re killing me here,” Kit had said, shaking his head. He’d put a hand at the back of Shepherd’s neck and tickled the short hairs on his nape. “You don’t have to be a gentleman. Just so you know.”

Shepherd had touched his thumb to Kit’s mouth. “Rest up. Feel better. I won’t be all sweet next time. Just so you know.”

Kit’s grin had been brilliant. “Good. I’m going to hold you to that.”

Now at the store, he locked the door behind him, one hand on the bell to stop it from ringing in his ears. Someday he’d have to find out what sorcery Kit had used to stop it from jangling when he came in, but that could wait for later.

Garron, closing out the till, glanced up at him. “Huh. That’s not a good-date face. Everything okay?”

“Hmm? No. Just wondering.” Shepherd turned his hand over, looking at the front and then the back, and the wrist. He remembered taking Kit’s hand at the very start of the night—not hard, not too hard—but he’d seen a bruise starting to form when he’d said goodnight. That fast. He’d tested his grip on himself, and didn’t see any mark. It wasn’t him.

“Shepherd?” Garron closed the till drawer. “You want to start talking? Because you’re starting to worry me, here.”

Shepherd shook his head. “I’m fine. The date was…good.” Not a strong enough word, but it was the best his lame tongue could manage, and Garron relaxed at the sound of it, so that would do. For that part of it.

But as for the rest… Shepherd turned his hand over again, thinking of Kit’s fatigue, and the way he winced when he didn’t think Shepherd could see. “Do you know of any kind of anemia or fever that makes bruises come up?”
