CHAPTER TEN

“He’s back. Have you seen him?” Ethan asks. He’s perched in the corner chair of her hotel room. His arms are crossed in front of him and Lucas is doing the same exact thing in the chair opposite his brother.

Ever since she found out she’s pregnant a week ago, both Lucas and Ethan have stuck by her side like glue. They’re even sharing the room adjoining hers now, which is both annoying and comforting. Annoying because some nights she can hear them bickering over anything and everything. Comforting because she feels like she’s not alone through all of this.

Cole. He’s been in Portland the past week. God she misses him. Even through all the bullshit and the cheating, she misses him. The downside of love is that it doesn’t have an on or off switch. And deep within her soul, she still feels that he’s the one.

She places her hand on her stomach. There’s no bump yet but there’s a tiny heartbeat inside of her now. A part of her and a part of Cole. Of course, he deserves to know.

“I’ll talk to him,” she finally answers Ethan.

“So the two of you going to tell me what’s really going on or not?” Ethan harks out. Lucas eyes her but doesn’t say a word or move. “I know you’re both keeping something from me.”

“It’s nothing, Eth. I’ll talk to Cole when I get the chance.”

“When you get the chance?” Ethan asks. “Make the chance, Frankie. There’s a child’s life involved now. I don’t like that the asshole hasn’t so much as attempted to come after you. It’s fucking ridiculous and I don’t get it.”

“I’m sure he has his reasons and it’s not like I’m doing all of this for him to chase after me,” she answers without meeting his eyes.

“Well, I’m sure you both know what that reason is. Whatever it is, telling me would onset something you don’t want to happen, which means it’s big.”

“It’s kinda their personal business,” Lucas reminds Ethan.

“Frankie’s as good as it’s gonna get to a sister. We’re just gonna watch her go through this without a word? She ain’t alone anymore,” Ethan barks out at Lucas.

“She knows we have her back but it’s gotta be her choice,” Lucas fires back as if she isn’t sitting right there.

“Easy for you to say since you already know what’s going on,” Ethan gripes back at his brother.

Honestly, all she’s wanted to do since finding out is to tell Cole. But it’s been a week and she hasn’t come close to finding the right words to say, the right way to begin. It’s not just about the baby but what they have…what they had…it’s broken. A baby shouldn’t fix that. A baby should come in to something whole.

Madison. That’s who pops up in her mind now. His ex Madison tried to get pregnant to hold him back. Would this be the same thing? When Cole knows, will he feel obligated to stay with her when he no longer wants to? Because he would.
