I’d Say I’m Sorry – But I’m Not

Byrid was surprised, to say the least. She tried to urge her horse ahead to check for herself. “Soldiers? Why would there be soldiers?”

I made a noise at the back of my throat and she fell silent. The path inched across the cliffs, leading down towards the clear cluster of soldiers talking to each other, relaxed on their horses, obviously not expecting company. They hadn’t noticed us yet, but I wasn’t foolish enough to think that would last.

We had two options ahead of us – approaching them or ditching and heading back. I had a feeling, either way, we were colliding.

“That’s dark green,” I muttered. “Your brother’s colors, Byrid.”

“There are others…” Auror mused. “My people do not venture from our lands. I don’t know their dressings. What are the yellow ones?”

Byrid gathered her cloak together when I motioned her to, and she gazed out at our newfound friends with a look of unease. “Our bordering kingdom. And there, the light blue…none of them are supposed to be this close. And they have weapons. The library is a place of peace! What could they be doing here?”

Keeose and I shushed her, and I could see Auror’s fists tightening on the reins. We were in uncharted territory now.

In front of me, the paths were becoming even more clear. Sure, I could apologize to the soldiers if they caught up to us and give them some kind of spiel about being lost peasants. They’d harass us, but they’d probably let us go. We could live our lives out on the outskirts of a dying kingdom. But that wasn’t the life I was going to live.

If I wanted to keep going, I had to jump in.

“Everybody, hoods up,” I muttered, easing my stallion from his trot. “Remember, we’re just here to see the Library of Snorri. We have coin, we’re heading in, we’re grabbing the items for the portal, we’re leaving. No funny business. No crazy shit. And if anything happens, stay with me. We’re not getting separated.”

Auror gave a firm nod. “We will not separate.”

“Please don’t abandon me, Warrick,” Keeose whispered, pushing in as close to me as she could. “I don’t want to get kidnapped again.”

“We couldn’t possibly lose you,” Byrid assured her. “The black dirt you wear is far too…uh…unique.”

I could feel Keeose grind her teeth. “Wow. Thanks.”

“My pleasure.”

I shook my head. “Girls, focus.”

We weren’t the only alert ones. As we hugged along the cliffside, I finally got a good look at the path behind the soldiers. The path wasn’t the same twisted trail we’d been following for hours. It was a direct shot down to the library, in an almost perfect ramp.

Down below, the river snaked its way next to it and kept on along the valley. The Library of Snorri was the largest building I’d seen in this world by far. It’d clearly been built at different times. Some parts were rough stone, with spiraling staircases that you could only see glimpses of from the other side.
