They left the hotel an hour later but were only halfway to the car when Jane realised that she had forgotten her hat. As he waited on the drive, de Silva noticed Jocelyn Reeve coming down the steps from the hotel. He looked to be in a hurry, and his handsome face took on an irritable expression as he went over to a member of staff who had just parked a dark blue Lagonda on the drive.

Reeve grabbed the keys from him, but the staff member didn’t seem in a hurry to go. They exchanged a few words then Reeve’s expression became even more irritable. De Silva was too far away to hear exactly what was being said, but he managed to make out a few snatches of the Sinhalese they were speaking in. It sounded like the man was asking for a tip. Finally, Reeve reached into the breast pocket of his jacket. He tossed a few coins at him then got into his car and drove away at such speed that if the man hadn’t moved quickly, he might have been knocked down.

De Silva frowned. A strange encounter. It was very odd for a member staff to importune a guest, especially in full view of the hotel where one of his superiors might see him.

‘Goodness!’ Jane arrived at his side, her sunhat in her hand. ‘I wonder what that was all about. He nearly ran that poor man over.’

‘He certainly seemed very annoyed about something.’

‘Perhaps Edith Pargeter’s assessment of him as an unpleasant character isn’t so very far off the mark.’
