The Challenge

An accountancy firm had observed that the analytical nature of their work led their people unconsciously to look for problems in everything, to take a problem-orientated approach in conversations and relationships, and generally to focus on the negative. Of course auditors - like lawyers and some other professional services - should look for problems. That’s what they are paid by clients to find. But it becomes an issue when people can’t compartmentalise these abilities and begin to extend them to areas of their life where different skills would work better.

A pessimistic, fault-finding mind-set doesn’t help build relationships either with clients or with colleagues at work or at home. Shaun Anchor calls this ‘The Negative Tetris Effect’, a phenomenon where noticing problems and scanning for issues locks people into a negative spiral in all areas of their life.36 This happens because we’re bombarded with competing stimuli for our attention, we develop habits that act like a filter, a bit like a spam filter on your computer. Your brain filters for what’s familiar to you and you notice more of that. Scientists estimate that we remember or consciously deal with only one out of every hundred pieces of information we receive. The rest is dumped in this mental spam folder, hence if your job requires you to be critical or dig for issues then you develop the habit of doing this even where it’s not necessary or helpful, like in your home life or when you are building a new relationship with a client.
