A horse lies dead on the Gettysburg battlefield. Animals were not spared from the carnage of battle; at Gettysburg, an estimated 1,500 artillery horses lost their lives.

The bones and clothing of an unknown soldier are photographed after being unearthed from their shallow grave. During and after the war, the remains of countless hastily-buried Civil War soldiers were encountered on the old battlefields, often exposed after heavy rains.

This wartime image shows the remains of men killed at the Battle of Gaines' Mill, Virginia, in 1862. The bodies of these and other soldiers– either overlooked or ignored–were not buried after the battle; they instead decayed where they fell.
