Drew didn’t want to stop in either but he knew his mom would be on the phone to the Coast Guard within an hour of dark if he didn’t show up.

“Drew, is that you?”

“Yes, mama.”

“It’s a good thing. I hung up on the Coast Guard twice when I realized it hadn’t been that long after dark. It just seems like it gets dark so quick these days. Why you’re still wet! Come on in here and let me get you some tea. Where’s Christi? I know she went out there with you, it’s okay if she’s wet, tell her just to come on in. Jasmine, why don’t you get some towels out of the laundry and get some tea started. Now you want that Earl Grey don’t you? Me and Jasmine got to where we like the raspberry after dinner, that Earl Grey doesn’t seem to sit so well…”

“Mama. I can’t stay…”

“You don’t need to yell, son. I just think you need to warm up and get something in your stomach before you…

“Mama. I’ve got to go. There’s a problem at work that involves Christi. I have to go.”

“Oh, she’s such a sweetheart Drew. I’m hoping you can keep a smart girl like that one around for a little while. That fiery red-headed one was a little headstrong for you. Christi seems more like…”

“I need to use your phone, okay?”

“Sure. It’s right over there where it’s always been. We never got one of those wireless types, you know, just couldn’t seem to keep up with where I left it. I like the old rotary phone anyway, besides, nobody calls us anymore.”

Drew stepped into the other room and found the old black rotary phone still sitting on the credenza in the hall. He couldn’t decide whether to call Mack, call Javier, call the chief or call the marines. He dialed Mack knowing that he would help him do all of the above.

“Yel’low,” Mack answered

“Mack, its Drew!”

“Drew? What is this number? Don’t think I…”

“Mack, I need help.”

“Shoot. What can I do?”

“Long story, no time. I’m bringing samples to your office now.”

“Now? I thought maybe you meant…”

“Now Mack! I’ll tell you everything when I get to your office. It’s going to be a long night ...and one more thing.”

“What’s that?

“Call Javier and have him meet us.”

“It’s Saturday night, you know Javier is already warming up…”

“I know, tell him it’s urgent.”

“Urgent?” Mack asked.

“I mean urgent, Mack. They’ve got Christi.”
