Eating
Namibia’s multicultural capital provides a range of restaurants. It’s worth stretching your budget and indulging the in gourmand lifestyle while you’re in town. Be advised that reservations are a very good idea on Friday and Saturday nights.
Windhoek is a grocery paradise for self-caterers. The big names are Pick & Pay Offline map Google map ( Wernhill Park Centre) and Checkers Offline map Google map ( Gustav Voigts Centre) .
Paul’s INTERNATIONAL $
Offline map Google map ( 307176; Old Breweries Complex, Craft Market Inner Courtyard, cnr Garten & Tal Sts; mains N$30-60; 8am-5pm Mon-Fri, to 2pm Sat) Mixing brasserie, coffeeshop, and patisserie is this impressive eatery at the heart of Windhoek’s craft market. Dining takes place in an industrial space made much more interesting with modern African prints and decor. It’s a quirky mix – as are the menu options, which include tapas in the evenings, salads, freshly baked rolls and more substantial meals. Linking it all is a policy of low fat, no MSG and the use of fresh ingredients. The owner is a champion of disabled rights and has a great attitude towards the preparation of food. Call ahead as it can close at odd times.
Sardinia’s Restaurant ITALIAN $$
Offline map Google map ( 39 Independence Ave; dishes N$60-100; lunch, dinner) An energetic restaurant that is a focal point for dining along the main drag. There’s always a crowd, and understandably so, as it churns out first-class pizzas and an impressive array of pasta dishes. And it doesn’t stop there: chicken and beef dishes and salads are also offered (the baby chicken with herb and lemon is excellent).
Namibia Crafts Cafe CAFE $
Offline map Google map ( Old Breweries Complex, cnr Garten & Tal Sts; mains N$40-80; 9am-6pm Mon-Fri, to 3.30pm Sat & Sun) This cafe-restaurant-bar is a great spot to perch yourself above Tal St, checking out the local action and taking in the breeze from the outside deck. It’s one of the capital’s more pleasant places to consume food or have a cold drink – the extensive drinks menu includes health shakes and freshly squeezed juices. Meals in the way of salads, large pitas, cold meat platters, open sandwiches and healthy (or just filling) breakfasts hit the spot.
Gourmet INTERNATIONAL $$
Offline map Google map ( 232360; Kaiserkrone Centre, Post St Mall; mains N$70-180; breakfast, lunch & dinner Mon-Sat) Tucked away in a lovely, peaceful courtyard just off Post Street Mall, this alfresco bistro has one of the most comprehensive menus you’ve ever seen. The unifying trend is its adherence to using gourmet ingredients to create a blend of Namibian, German, French and Italian dishes that are as innovative as they are delicious. The carpaccio of ostrich is recommended but ask them to go easy on the oil.
O Pensador ANGOLAN, SEAFOOD $$
Offline map Google map ( 221223; cnr Mandume Ndemufayo Ave & John Meinert St; mains N$130-200; dinner) A quality seafood restaurant with a twist of Angolan here and a hint of Portuguese there; the food may not be squirming on your plate but our overall impression was one of freshness, tasty morsels and attentive service.
