Covered in Blood

“What the hell do you want?” River roared.

The three shifters that closed in on us didn’t slow down. Their heavy footsteps pounded the grass, tearing it apart as they marched toward us. I narrowed my eyes on them and tried to recall if I met them at the resistance but drew a blank. Whoever these muscled giants were, I’ve never seen them before.

River, however, seemed oddly familiar with them.

Rage filled his eyes as he stepped around me, shielding me from the shifters’ fiery gazes. My stomach did jumping jacks and I struggled to push my way past him, but each time I took a step, he mirrored the motion to keep me hidden. I peeked over his shoulder at the shifters and worry set in. They weren’t just big; they were absolutely massive. The two on the right could have been linebackers with their broad shoulders and chests the size of mountains. Their eyes glowed a brilliant orange, and the wide shapes of their noses paired with matching army cuts made me think they were likely brothers. Even twins maybe. As scary as these two were, and they were scary AF, the one in the middle was my biggest worry. There was no comparing him to the others, and his height alone made him one of the biggest shifters I’ve seen. Something about his pale skin and glowing blue eyes reminded me of Raiden, and I wondered if they were related. He stomped his feet into the ground and pulled back on his toes like a bull ready to charge. Muscles tensed under the gray shirt that clung to his ripped body, and I could see steam rising from his thin lips as he breathed.

“Step aside, cub,” Raiden-lookalike growled. “We have no business with you.”

River did not budge. “Whatever business you think you have here, rethink it.”

The linebackers exchanged looks and grinned. Their massive arms stretched over their chests and they ripped their sports tanks off in unison. My eyes grew as their bulging chests glistened in the low light of the setting sun. This is the weirdest strip show I’ve ever seen. Not that there were many.

Frigid air blew past me and I breathed in relief, inhaling the fresh scent of the trees that offered a welcomed opposition to the heated steam the shifters gave off. I veered my body and withdrew the dagger from my boot, one hand already clutching the amber I always carried with me. The crystal vibrated in my palm and its magic rode me in waves. I shivered as shimmering lights danced in my peripheral before sending my own magic to meet the amber. A bright flame burst in my palm and I growled, forcing my way from behind River to face our attackers.

“Getting your mate to do the dirty work, cub? Pathetic,” Raiden-lookalike bellowed.

The two on his side chuckled. “She’s not his mate. Gotta be a shifter to mate to this loser.”

Sickness overpowered me but I didn’t let it stop my resolve.
