Don’t Forget to Reimburse Yourself

No matter how organized you are, there are bound to be times when you inadvertently use personal money to pay for real estate–related expenses. During your grocery trip to Costco, for example, you may remember that you need some copy paper or pens for the office. Or while mailing your holiday cards, you may realize you need more postage for your real estate mailers. If you do not have your company card with you, it is okay to pay for these expenses with cash or your personal card. Just make sure to reimburse yourself from the business account later to keep the expenses within the correct account.

We do not recommend that you do this often, of course. Ideally, you’ll pay for real estate expenses with business funds and personal expenses with personal funds. In those certain unexpected cases when you pay business expenses with personal funds, here are a two ways to ensure that you capture these costs for your bookkeeping and tax deductions.​
