CHAPTER 4

The yellow grass receded into patches here and there, and all over the surrounding terrain as it became rockier the closer they moved to the foot of the purple mountains. Vin had regained enough of his strength to walk unimpaired and Bonnie trailed behind him. Nick was the last as they walked in a single file line and he was responsible for checking their rear, or their “six” as Vin kept referring to it. When they reached the full face of the mountain, and the ground was completely visible, Bonnie shook her head at the sight. The ground appeared to have dirt that was a navy-blueish type of color, and the purple mountains had flecks of gold that pulsated in it that almost made the rocks appear alive. Vin moved to about a foot away from the rock face and Bonnie stood beside him. She reached her hand out with care and touched the mountain. The rocks had a coolness to them that was unsettling, yet familiar. Nick moved to the right of Vin and looked up. The mountain went up as far as the eye could see and seemed to form a barrier that connected to the sky, almost like the wall of a cage would. There was no way to scale the mountain, at least not that Bonnie could see. The rocks did not provide enough foothills or handholds to climb, and in Vin’s current condition, with only three life bars remaining, she didn’t want to even attempt such a feat. Bonnie knew she was in great shape, because she enjoyed rock climbing in her spare time, but this was not a normal cliff or a normal set of circumstances.

“There,” Vin said and pointed to their right. He had stepped back and looked at the immediate area.

“What?” Bonnie asked.

“There’s our way through,” Vin answered. “There’s a mountain path that cuts through and leads to the other side.”

“Let me guess,” Nick jumped in. “There’s pitfalls through the path.”

“Dude, did you even play this game?” Vin asked. “No wonder I was able to knock you out.”

“Some of us have a life already Vin, not trying to get one,” came Nick’s response and it dripped with sarcasm.

Bonnie rolled her eyes and let out a breath. “Don’t you guys ever stop? We don’t have time for this.” Vincenzo and Nicholas squared off and stared at one another with an intense glare that made Bonnie pinch her lips together. “Guys,” she said. “Stop this. You’re friends.”

“Yeah,” Vin said.

“Exactly,” Nick agreed.

“Don’t worry about us Bon-Bon,” Vin reassured her. “We do this kind of stuff all the time. We’re men.”

“No,” Nick growled. “I’m a man. You’re just a dick.”

“Man, I’m man enough to bust your ass,” Vin responded.

“Stop!” Bonnie scolded. “What’s gotten into you guys?”

“Nothing,” Nick seethed. “Nothing at all Bonnie. You know what I’m going to do? I’m going to go scout ahead and see what’s what. Because one of us has to make a move,” he said as he pointed at Vin.

“You do that,” Vin snapped back.
