“Do you know your way cross country back to the lodge?” he asked, reaching into the truck and getting out his cell. He flipped on the flashlight app and walked around the truck, squatting down to more closely examine several of the hoof prints.

“River Run is closer.”

“Maybe, but I’m not inclined to share you at the moment, and I’d like to find out more about who did this.”

“Don’t you think we should call it in to the police?”

He shook his head. “No. I’d rather play my cards close to the vest. They’re not going to do anything but write up a report. Is there anyone at the ranch who you trust absolutely? Not just because they’re part of your claw or you’ve known them all your life, but because you know deep in your gut that they’d stand with us against all comers.”

“Todd Wilkins. I’ve known him all my life. He’s not going to like how you engineered getting us together, but once he knows I’m happy, he’ll be on board. What do you need?”

“Call and let him know what happened.” He opened his wallet and handed her a credit card. “Let him have my card number and ask him to get it towed somewhere that can fix it, but that isn’t close by. I’d just like to see what happens when we have no reaction. Let him know we’ll be staying at the lodge for a few days.”

She opened her cell and placed the call to Todd, relaying the information as requested. She laughed and hung up. “He was in agreement with you. He’ll get four new tires in the morning and change these out and will then drive it himself. He said the tow truck driver has a big mouth.”

Cash smiled and reached out to stroke her hair. He collected her cell phone and bundled all of their things together so that he could take their things with them, carrying them in his mouth. “I only have a very vague idea of how to find the lodge if we try to cut across the back country. Otherwise, we’ll have to go back the way we came.”

“Good thing for you your bonded spirit has an excellent sense of direction and was born and raised at River Run. It’s a bit of a hike, but most of the terrain is fairly easy.”

She shifted and waited for him to do the same and together they bounded off into the night.
