Chapter 8

My first meet and greet and it was going to be ruined by freaking Wayne the chef and his stupid hot face. It took everything in me to keep my composure and not scream at him to get his stupid face out of here.

I’d heard he stopped doing personal meals, and of course had assumed it was my fault. He’d hated me so much that he’d had to quit his job. I’d felt horribly guilty and for a solid month wondered what was so terrible about me that Wayne would run from his chosen career.

After I’d finally been able to push it out of my mind, I’d felt better, but the little guilt monster had still raised his ugly head a few times over the last three months, making me wonder what it had been.

“So, you’re a caterer now?” I curled up a lip. It seemed like a step down.

“Sort of. I’m helping Miss Olivia today, but normally I’m doing something similar to my personal chef gig. I host a service where meals are prepped and either delivered or available for pickup. I can take on more clients this way, and I’m not in people’s homes, digging my nose in where it doesn’t belong.” He winked. “I learned that lesson the hard way.”

Whoa. So, he recognized that he’d been in the wrong when he’d butted into my life. That was nice to hear.

He looked damn good. The dark circles under his eyes were gone and his black hair was shinier than I’d ever seen it. He seemed to be taking better care of himself. Maybe all the time he was saving by not going to people’s houses and cooking was doing him good. “Well, that’s all well and good, but the fact remains that I wanted Miss Olivia to cater.”

“I can’t help that,” he said. “Olivia and I are partners now. I’m sorry, but the information is in the catering contract that you signed.” He shrugged. “I do sincerely apologize that this isn’t what you wanted, but I promise I’ll do my best to make sure it goes off without a hitch. I don’t want to disappoint you.”

“When did all this happen?” I asked, waving my arm to the taco bar half set up in front of me. “The new business?” I had an idea, not long after he quit me. Really soon after, actually, quick enough that I’d thought it was all my fault.

“Not long after I quit working for you, I realized how unhappy I was. I love cooking, but I’m not big on customer service. I made some changes in my life and about that time, Miss Olivia approached me about a partnership. I don’t usually handle the catering side. She’s got a normal team for that, but in this case, I’m here.” He grinned extra big. “And glad to be here.”

Damn, his dimple drew my eye every time. I wanted to lick it.

Shit. I had to get my mind out of that particular gutter. “Do you like it?”

He nodded eagerly.
