“I’m in the middle of a case, Ma. I’ll have to come up later.”

“You do what you have to do, Aristotle. Just remember, your uncle Constantine is getting older.”

My uncle hates to be reminded of his age and she knew it. He cut in and started rattling like a machine gun. Again the word I heard repeated was stubborn. I held the phone away from my ear until he ran out of breath. Then my mother took a turn. My brother, sister, and father share the family penchant for hearty debate. It wouldn’t be long before they’d be jumping in.

At one point, my mother and my uncle paused for breath.

I said, “I’ll call you tomorrow and let you know when I’m coming,” and quickly hung up.

I don’t know if they even heard me. I sat there staring into space, wondering if insanity was genetic, realizing that it was too late to have a DNA transplant. Lunacy had its advantages, I suppose. If I’d been sane, I wouldn’t have to do what I was about to do. I went through my telephone book, found the number I was looking for, and called Charlie Snow.
