Aster watched through a pair of binoculars as the caravan pulled out of the Renaissance fair. They rode west, following the headlights of an old station wagon. “I count thirty-one of them,” she said. “Six civilians, twenty-four officers, and one soldier with a scoped rifle. Headed west.”

“How can you see anything, ma’am?” Sergeant Rico peered through his set of binoculars and muttered a curse. “All I see are headlights and taillights.”

Lieutenant Paxton aimed his night vision scope at the caravan. “I see ‘em, but not with the same clarity her naked eyes can.”

“That’s a Specialist for you. Glad you’re on our side, boss!”

Aster’s lips twitched into a faint smile. “And I’m glad to have you both.”

“What should we do about this, ma’am?” Paxton asked.

“Our orders are to observe and see where the rebel police are going. Wherever they’re going, it’s to receive cargo. Those wagons are empty.”

“Lady in Black, this is Concierge,” a female voice said over the line.

“Concierge, Black. What is it?”

“A new reservation has been made for you and your Party of Nine. Our Obsidian rivals are up to something.”

A thrill of excitement ran through Aster. Obsidian was the real threat, not the police. Still, she said, “We just placed our order for western omelets. Should we leave before they’re done?”

“We’ll pick them up for you.”

Another team would head west and continue surveillance. Aster glanced at the others and shrugged. “Roger, Concierge. We’re on our way.”
