Now seated at last on the throne from which she had been excluded, one of Mary’s top priorities was marriage, which not only mattered to her personally but was also of great political significance. If providing a male heir had been important for the securely positioned Henry VIII, it was doubly so for his daughter. She could not rest easy in her position knowing that a large group of her subjects had already made a move against her and that her religion set her apart from many in the country’s governing elite. Moreover, faith added extra motivation to ensure an heir of her own; if she died without a child, then the crown would revert to her Protestant half-sister Elizabeth. In Mary’s eyes, this would be a failure both for her people and for God. She needed to ensure that England remained Catholic after her passing, and that the reforms of her father and brother were relegated to the past.
