CHAPTER 2
The text from Lou was sitting in my inbox when I made it back to the car. Not only had he sent Riaâs address, heâd added her place of work, if you could call it that, and the name of her pimp. I needed to send the big guy some donuts â I owed him.
There was second text too, this one from Justice. It was all shouty capitals â which I was used to â but even with the bad manners, it contained a ton of useful information. Justice was on the cyber trail of the demons. Sheâd come to the same conclusions I had about the suicides in Vegas, but where Iâd been going with information from a guy in a bar, sheâd found a site on the dark web, where the demon â though he doesnât announce himself as such â offered to do desperate peopleâs dirty work âfor a small priceâ. My guess thatâs what happened with the guy inside. The demon took out the wife and thenâ¦. Okay, so I didnât have it all worked out, maybe they had a disagreement over the fee or something.
There wasnât much detail in Justiceâs text, and I was just about to call her when I reached the bottom, where she said:
IâM ON MY WAY. DONâT DO ANYTHING STUPID UNTIL I GET THERE.
But I couldnât resist. What did she want me to do, sit here twiddling my paws while she high tailed it to Vegas? That would take hours. So I put the truck in drive and made my way across town to the address Lou had labelled as âworkâ.
Iâd just pulled up in a dark corner of the car park of a seedy bar in a seedier part of town, when I spotted my prey. Ria was pressed up against the side wall of the bar by a big guy with greasy-looking salt and pepper hair. She didnât look in trouble, and whatever the transaction had been, it looked to be over. The big guy shoved away from her and turned to walk away. Ria, or if my hunch was correct, demon-Ria, shouted, âYouâre a pig!â after him and the man, who was tall and stocky, with a paunch, turned back to face her, scowled and took two threatening paces back in her direction.
âComing from a slut, thatâs a compliment,â he snarled. How dumb could you get. Even from here I could feel the rage pouring off her.
I didnât stop to listen to any more. The guy might be an asshole, but he didnât deserve to die, and although he was probably too far away for me to get to him in time, I had to try. I burst into a run â but it was as good as over before I was even half way across the lot.
The john strode back to her, lifted a hand and cracked it across her face. She hunched over, faking a lesson learned for all she was worth, but what the john didnât see was the little devil smile before she shot her arms out in front of her and .
