strigil or oil, but Hashem led me to a room where once naked, water was showered down on me from above. I was thus able to rid myself of most of my aromatic disguise before immersing myself in the blessedly hot, scented waters of the bath Hashem had drawn for me in the next room.
So the Surena was to be laid on the altar of jealousy and fear, dispatched by a Roman gladius. I had witnessed nothing about the man that in any way resembled the traitorous individual described by Phraates, but who was I to judge? He seemed a man of honor to me; who could blame him for wanting to defend his country against an invader? I felt for him, but did my empathy extend far enough to warn him? What could come of that but my own summary incarceration followed by a swift and ill-attended execution?
The person who needed this information most was Crassus, but how was I to get it to him? Should I get it to him? What intelligence, whispered in the dark, would save the most lives? Which strategy would be most likely to keep Livia safe? Did I really want my old master and my Roman friends overwhelmed by a broken alliance with traitorous Armenia. I could not bear the thought of any of it. I needed to speak with Melyaket, but he was miles away. For all I knew he might be conferring with my old dominus this very minute, sipping mulled wine. Then again, he might be sitting with Livia, recounting stories of our adventures, gazing into eyes whose impertinent sparkle I had had to manufacture with the unsatisfactory machinery of memory for the past four months.
Wait a moment! Melyaket had said the Surena would keep me close from now on! If the Parthian general was to march into a trap, I would be at his right hand. And his right hand, and all the rest of him, would be met by the disciplined legions of Octavius and Petronius, not to mention the overheated Publius, out for blood and glory. Outnumbered and outmatched, the Parthians, myself among them, would be slaughtered. And afterwards, would Crassus be swept away by Phraates’ scheme, and all who stood by him?
