CHAPTER TWENTY
MIKO
Orion slept with his head in my lap, curled into a ball. My hand rested on his back, his gentle breaths easing my tension.
Basil was finally asleep in his chairâafter a few angry glaresâCate wide awake in hers.
âYou okay?â I asked her.
âYes. How are you?â
âNeeding a cup of tea.â
She smiled. âMe too. Heâs one resilient man, isnât he?â
âHeâs special. And smelly.â
âWerewolves in glass houses, sir.â
I stroked Orionâs scarlet hair. âItâs like silk.â
Silk I never want to stop touchingâ¦
âI wish I knew what to say to you, Miko.â
âYou donât have to say anything.â
âI know, but I wish I did.â
âYour husband said enough.â I smiled at her to temper my coldness.
Youâre warming me up, I thought at my mate.
She tapped her fingers on the arm of the chair. âBut it didnât change anything, did it?â
âNot really.â
She eyeballed a carriage clock on the mantelpiece. âI thought weâd always be together in Haven. The longer we were there, the more I settled into a routine. If Iâm honest, Iâd given up hope on finding a cure, and that was okay.â
I tilted my head. âOkay?â
âNo, Dawn will never be okay. But Iâd resigned myself to the new world, you know?â
âLike Lance?â
âNot like Lance at all. Come on, sir. You know I would never get behind his logic.â
âSome of what he says is logical. Natureâs way of evolving the status quo. Humans are done, now itâs the days of the supernaturals.â
She shook her head. âItâs cruel. I miss the humans. I miss the world as it was.â
âI know what youâre trying to say. Iâm being a dick.â
âI blame Lance.â She stroked the side of her face with the back of her handâshe often did that when thinking.
âCan we not say his name for a while?â
âYes, sir.â
After a minute of silence, Cate staring off into space, I asked her to continue.
She did. âWell, because we never really found any information on Dawn, the hunt for the oracle going nowhere, I planted some roots. For me, Haven was perfect. A fortress, having everything we could ever need.â
âThanks to your husbandâs genius engineering.â
âYes. I supposeâ¦I suppose I got too comfortable.â Her hand went to her belly, and I sat up straighter.
She met my hard stare. âSirâ¦â
âCateâ¦â
âIâm an idiot. I got too comfortableâ¦â She dipped her chin. âIâ¦â
Oh, God. âDoes James know?â
âNo. Oh, Miko. What have I done? Weâre both always so careful. Iâ¦I donât know what to do. I canât bring a child into this world. Not when weâve lost a safety that was never really there.â
âWe canâ ââ
âIâm an idiot. What is wrong with me?â
âBreathe, Cate. Just breathe.â
She held her stomach protectively. âThis is supposed to be joyful. Iâve always wanted a family, especially after meeting James. Heâll be so happy when he finds out. Onlyâ¦â She sobbed gently. âI canât have a baby in a zombie apocalypse. What if itâs human? I canât⦠I canâtâ¦â
Highly unlikely the baby would be human, though not impossible. After all, look at my bloodline.
I lifted Orionâs head off my lap, laying him down to attend to my pack member.
