CHAPTER FORTY
âHEY, KRISTOF, IS just like the old days, yeah,â said Pyotr, buzzing.
âDa, just like the old days.â
Kristof drove the garbage truck carefully for twenty minutes or so, keeping to the speed limits, junctions and traffic lights. He eventually turned down a quiet side road where the other garbage truck sat sandwiched between the BMW and Range Rover. Kristof lowered his window as he pulled alongside. One of his men handed him the paperwork from the real truck and nodded as Kristof grabbed it and passed it to Pyotr before driving on. As they passed, Tom could see Kristofâs men pointing guns at the faces of the terrified garbage men through the open cab doors.
The smiles and banter dropped as they drove on towards the prison in tense silence. The prison wasnât hard to spot with its high brick wall and imposing three-storey cell blocks behind it. They turned onto the approach road, driving through open blue metal gates into a carpark outside the prison wall. Two huge red entrance doors lay straight ahead of them. Stopping in front of them, Kristof lowered his window to the two approaching guards. He handed the paperwork from the real garbage truck over with a casual smile and sat back while they checked it.
âOk, open up,â the man said into his radio before handing the paperwork back to Kristof. âPull into the courtyard and step out of the truck.â
The huge red doors cracked and ticked as they opened slowly outwards. Kristof gave a small wave to the man and drove carefully through the tight opening, pulling into the space pointed out by a guard.
âFollow us and say nothing,â said Kristof quietly over his shoulder to Tom and John. He turned the ignition off, and they all climbed out of the truck and stood to one side. The guards did an unenthusiastic routine search for weapons, drugs or contraband in the cab, while Tom watched a prison transport van pull into the courtyard and park on the opposite side. The driver and passenger got out and opened the back, ready for prisoners to be loaded. They walked across to a metal door and waited to be buzzed in, laughing and joking with one of the guards before disappearing inside. Looking back as the guards came out of the truck, they copied Kristof and put their arms up while the guards patted them down for weapons or drugs.
âOk, turn it around and reverse it through the gate over there. The bins are lined up by the kitchens,â the guard said, turning away from them and speaking into his radio.
As Kristof started the truck, the gate opened ahead of them. He turned the truck around and backed it carefully towards the commercial bins located in a smaller courtyard by the kitchens. The two prison guards followed protocol, escorting the truck on either side as it reversed. The tension and feeling of being trapped grew by the second inside the cab as they moved up to the bins.
