Text of a letter from Sanctâ Germain Franciscus to Atta Olivia Clemens; carried by Rogres in the company of the players.
My dearest Olivia;
First, do not be angry with Rogres; he tried to convince me to come with him and the players who accompany him, but I have refused; for you see, there is a warrant for the death of Francois de Saint-Germain, Sieur Ragoczy, and his manservant. It seems prudent for Rogres to travel apart from me until the danger of such a warrant is past, as it seems equally prudent for Francois de Saint-Germain to disappear.
I am continuing on to Bruges, to my holdings there, but not as Sieur Ragoczy. I will be safe enough, you need not fear. Rogres will explain all to you, and you are not to berate him for complying with my instructions, or for permitting me to continue my travels alone. I rely on you to honor my obligation to him. You will keep him safe for me until I come to claim him again; if I do not come, I commend him to your care. No doubt he and Niklos will manage well enough somehow; you will not lack for protection in their care.
As to these players: they are in need of a place to be safe while they wait for the Great Dying to end so that they may once again resume their travels to the market-towns and the castles where they have been welcome before. It is true that players and troubadors are not being turned away from as many places as other travelers are, but the Blood Roses may be more eager for them than a magistrate or a lord. They have lost some of their number already; let them be spared any greater loss. Their leader is Faustino and I have treated him for putrid lungs before he set out with his company. Rogres will have taken care of him during their travels. You will find them entertaining, and no doubt you will learn much from what they have to tell you.
Second, do not castigate me for what I am doing. It is only what I must do if I am to retain any trace of integrity. I know you would delight in hectoring me, but consider that I must do what my blood has bound me to do; you have experienced the strength of the bond.
If you are vexed with me, you may tell me so when next I see you. Content yourself for now with the certainty of my gratitude, and my undying love
.
By my own hand,
Ragoczy Sandâ Germain Franciscus
