TWENTY-EIGHT
After a long hot shower, Eve applied dark makeup and gelled her dyed hair, spiking it just a bit. She studied her face in the mirror. She slipped the collar around her neck and buckled it in the back. She wanted to look like she was new at this, but willing to learn.
Her dress was laid out on the bed, her ankle boots by the door. She got dressed and laced up the boots after slipping the tiny folding knife and handcuff key down into the bottom inside a small pouch taped to the inside of the boot. She checked the mirror to see if the bulge was noticeable, but it was under the buckles and hidden.
She had a small purse to go along with her outfit. Just typical things inside the purse: some makeup, breath spray, her burner cell phone. She was sure her purse and the pockets of her trench coat would be searched before she could enter the club.
She walked around in the heels, trying to get used to them a little, then she sat down. She didnât want her feet and calves too sore before tonight.
In the full-length mirror on the back of the bathroom door, she checked herself out. She hoped she looked like a newbie, a little unsteady, a little unsure. Her dress revealed her muscular body. She could hide her arms with the mini jacket sheâd bought to go along with the dress, but she couldnât do much about her legs. She was taller than the average woman, and the five-inch heels made it worse. But Roman was tall, and he would still be taller than she was even with her heels.
It was now after seven oâclock, dark outside. She pulled up a local news station on her laptop. No news about any new missing women, and not much more about Natâs body being found in the dumpster behind the small family restaurant.
She clicked on a weather app. It would be cold and clear tonight; no rain or snow in the forecast. She clicked on an article about a small group of women who were fans of the Vampireâserial killer groupies. There was another article about people who believed the Vampire was a real vampire, and that the vampires of the world were finally revealing themselves after hiding for centuries. One person argued that we needed to accept vampires, that they couldnât help the fact that they needed blood. It was a medical condition, the only way they could survive.
Ping.
Eve closed down the page she was on and opened the chatroom. Virgil had finally sent her a private message.
The Onyx Cellar tonight. The password is Paper Dragon. Youâll be on the list to get in. And then he listed the address.
She wrote back: On my way.
Iâll be waiting.
Eve powered her laptop down and closed it. She stuffed it into a duffel bag. She already had her research inside the bag. In another bag she had a few of her possessions and her cell phones.
