Chapter Fourteen

A noise at her back door roused Scarlett from the couch where she’d drifted off to sleep hours earlier. Half-awake, she shuffled to the kitchen to see what the commotion was and found Dante and another male standing out in the cold, neither one dressed for winter in upstate New York.

Flinging the door open, she waved them in. “Oh my God! You must be freezing out there! Come in, come in.”

Dante hurried in, followed by the man he had with him. Scarlett shut the door and turned to the stove to start the kettle because this unknown male looked like he wouldn’t make it much longer if she didn’t do something to warm him up. “I’ll make you both some tea and if you just give me a few minutes, I can get some soup started.”

“Thanks, Scarlett. We need somewhere to hang out for a while, if that’s okay,” Dante said as he rubbed his arms to get them warm.

She knew by the sound of his voice that something was wrong. Turning around, she looked at him and then his friend and saw the look of loss she’d seen in the mirror so often after her mother died.

“Whatever you need, Dante.”

He forced a smile and said, “I guess introductions are in order. Scarlett, this is Theron. He’s a clyten like me.”

Theron tried to smile, but his expression remained sad. Or maybe it was scared. Scarlett wasn’t sure, but something had happened to him. A teenager, she assumed around eighteen or nineteen, he looked like he’d just found out his girlfriend cheated on him. Good looking with dark hair and dark eyes that showed his emotions, he likely had a lot of girls who liked him, she imagined.

Walking up to him, she took his hand in hers and felt its icy coldness next to her skin. “I’m happy to meet you, Theron. I don’t know how much Dante has told you about me, but you’ll be safe here.”

Nodding, he tried to smile again with a little more success this time. “I’ve never met a witch. What’s it like being one?”

Scarlett opened her mouth to answer his question, but Dante interrupted her. “Dude, I never told you she was a witch. How did you know? Oh, let me guess. Sion and Kali.” Looking at Scarlett, he said, “Sorry. You wouldn’t think a group of warriors would be as gossipy as a bunch of hens, but they are, at least when it comes to my life.”

Theron looked confused and shook his head. “Nobody told me. I read it in her mind. She’s worried that her coven is going to find us here, but she likes you, so she doesn’t want to send us away.”

When he finished talking, Dante’s mouth hung open and Scarlett didn’t know what to think. Or if she should try not to think at all since Theron obviously had the ability to read her thoughts.

“Holy shit, dude!” Dante said, smacking him in the arm. “I thought this whole mind reading thing wasn’t really something you had control over.
