Chapter Ten
Quincey
âMotherfucker,â Michael growled and seized Dez by the shoulder, towing him backward. Dez nearly toppled but kept his feet by sheer luck. Iris and Levi were retreating too, but all Dez could see was the mountainous figure rising from the bed. Quincey was shirtless, his only clothes boxer briefs, but the quadriceps that bulged from them were twitching, the broad pecs twitching; even his abs, which werenât that defined but were still more pronounced than most menâs, seemed to undulate under his skin. Ebony-bearded and pale-skinned, Quincey rose to a height of at least six-seven. His fists were balled, his head was down, and his eyes were orange hellfire. His face hadnât yet contorted into the heart-stopping mask of the vampire, but Dez knew that wasnât far off. When the eyes glowed, the change was upon them, and if Dez and the others didnât get out now, theyâd be done.
âWatch his crossbow,â Susan said, and a gust of disorientation blew through Dez. Heâd forgotten all about her, forgotten about her betrayal. Truth be told, heâd forgotten about the crossbow, but now he aimed it, saw the giant vampireâs eyes track the bowâs movements, and Dez fired. He didnât know if it was skill, an accident, or the jilted wrath at having Susan sell him out to her newer, exponentially stronger, partner. Whatever it was, the bolt whizzed over Susanâs shoulder and chunked into Quinceyâs bulky torso just under the left nipple. Quincey grunted, half twisted, and when his face swung up and snarled at him, Dez knew two things: one, half their mission had failed. If Susan didnât want to be saved, Susan wasnât going to be saved. And two, if they didnât kill Quincey now
(Susan too?)
the rest of the vampires would be alerted to their presence.
But even as Dez loaded another bolt he knew it wouldnât be enough to bring down the giant vampire. Not unless he bullseyed one of Quinceyâs eyes, and even then theyâd need to saw the bastardâs head off to make sure he didnât revive, and just how would they do that with Susan around, screaming and doing everything she could to doom them?
We gag her, a coldhearted voice said. We gag her and after weâve killed Quincey, we hog-tie her sorry ass. Then we find Cassidy.
The giant vampire had reached down to grasp the bolt, exposing his right side, so when Dez fired again, he nailed Quincey in the rib cage, his bolt all but disappearing. Quincey roared.
âStop it!â Susan screamed, and actually took a step toward Dez. The flashlights were swooping and bobbing over the whole scene, transforming it into a stroboscopic nightmare, but even in the chaos Dez could see the hurt and indignation in Susanâs face. âQuincey saved me!â she shouted. âHe saved me and you let them get me and put down that fucking crossbow!â
âAh, to hell with this,â Michael said and surged forward. Dez saw the hammer in his grip, knew heâd avoid using his pyrokinetic powers if he could.
