Augustus did not ask for me that evening, nor did he open the secret door. It remained closed, as the previous days.

Any other 'Red' would probably be relieved at the time she had to herself, and the fact that no vampire was coming on to her.

But I was not like any other Red who longed for the time when she would be too old to attract the attention of her master. While I was fortunate that Augustus had no pedophilic tendencies, I was still human and thus my time was limited.

Not only because, like my mother, I would probably get my first wrinkles at forty. If Thorstein wanted to use me for breeding, he would take me out of service even earlier to reduce the risks that pregnancy entailed.

The fact that I had a younger sister could mean both something good and something bad for me. She would replace me. Either as a Scarlet or in breeding. In the worst case for her, it could mean that she would be mated very early to give birth to as many offspring as possible. Maybe even before she turned twenty.

I knew all these things from my mother. She had overheard Augustus' conversations with Thorstein whenever she had the opportunity.

That was one of the few advantages that one had as a red in the presence of vampires. For them, you were air or simply posed no threat, which is why you were often witness to conversations or even actions that revealed a lot.

However, I could also imagine that most people did not consider that what they heard would be useful to them at some point. My mother knew better and so did I.

Despite his hint, I did not see Augustus for the next few days. Moreover, I noticed that the cleric who came to me every morning to take my pulse and blood pressure and then draw my blood took more than the hundred milliliters.

This observation worried me. If Augustus wanted, he never had to see me again, should the blood be enough for him in this way.

Every day that went by and I spent standing in my seat next to Timothy without Augustus, who was sitting in front of me, looking at me was pure torture.

In Armand's presence, they had at least talked about me. It had let me know that I was at least slightly important to Augustus.

My service as Scarlet was so very different from what I had imagined. I had assumed that my master would not be able to wait to finally get me into bed with him.

Well, with every day, every hour, no, every minute, the doubts grew in me whether I would even be able to give Augustus what he thirsted for. I had observed myself that he loved to be a monster when it came to his sexual desires.

I had been prepared for exactly these needs. But now I had the feeling that I had forgotten everything I had been taught.

Was that what Augustus intended? After all, he loved a helpless, frightened victim.
