CHAPTER 20

I exit the locker room and I’m a mixture of elated versus disgusted with myself. One thing’s for sure, I think of Ava in a new light. I may even look forward to seeing her now and again. I like to organize things in my brain, and Ava never fit into a category. She was always floating out in space, yet somehow annoyingly in my life, due to Thomas. Now, I can put her into a category. The same category as chocolate cake, beef jerky, “I Love Landra”, snow days, and toasted peanuts, though not in that order of course. At some point I’ll have to return to this and try to figure out exactly where she fits in for my own peace of mind. Does she fit above beef jerky or toasted peanuts? Hmm ….

I sit across from Shaylee at the house. I paint a few brushstrokes on the canvas.

She looks over at me. “You look as if you’re deep in thought.”

“I am,” I answer vaguely, confirming her question and giving nothing more.

“About what?” she inquires.

“Oh, nothing.”

I am deep in thought. I’m wondering how I can get her mouth to where Ava’s was on my schwanz. Of course, I won’t tell her that. I’m afraid she’ll actually hit me. The more I think about this, the more I’m distracted. I need to concentrate. I look down.

“Not now,” I whisper to my pants.

Shaylee looks over. “You like someone?”

“What? That’s crazy.” I feel my cheeks go hot.

“You do.” She perks up in excitement.

I like you, I think to myself but of course, I don’t say it.

“So who’s the girl?” she asks.

“She’s—”

“I knew it.”

“She’s nobody.”

“Well, nobody’s got you awfully glowy.”

“Glowy?”

“Yeah, could tell the moment you walked in there was someone.”

“Oh,” I say. “Well, there’s this girl,” I say looking into her eyes. They’re a lighter shade of brown, not quite russet. I gulp. “In my school. She’s—”

“Please tell me it’s not some dumb airhead,” she sighs

“Of course.” It now occurs to me that I have to actually think of something besides what she did that I like. “You’d like her. She changes her hair a lot.”

Shaylee cringes. “Wait. You’re attracted to her because she changes her hair?”

“One reason—”

“What else?” she interrogates.

I gulp, my mind blank.

“Next time, point her out to me. I like to see who people are attracted to. You probably have some sort of type—”

“Doubt it.” I shake my head. “Wait. How will I point her out to you if we’re on the opposite team?”

Shaylee thinks. “Turn to face her and then scratch your neck on both sides.”

“Like a secret code?” I smile, all thought of any other girl disappearing from my mind.

“Exactly.”

* * *

At the soccer match, I do the secret code, motioning to Ava who’s standing off to the side. She actually looks better today than usual. I still can’t quite place my finger on it. Shaylee gives me a weird look. She’s distracted and we tie once again, but this time not due to my skill, I hate to admit it, but due to her distraction.
