Driving the sleek, black SUV through Laodicea, I flicked me eyes to Felix sitting in the back seat. From the moment we’d left, he’d been tapping away at his laptop or speaking to people through an earpiece. The man didn’t stop. And it seemed that there wasn’t a part of the Community’s business he didn’t manage. From the cleaners and the PR to the Shepherds.

I followed the sat-nav to the Overseer’s palace and parked in the driveway. As soon as the wheels stopped rolling, Felix was out of the back and knocking on the front door.

A well-fed, older woman answered, dressed in a simple black uniform and a fluorescent white apron. They spoke.

The woman rang her hands and dropped her eyes.

Felix looked at his watch, then nodded to the woman. The door closed and he made his way back to the car. From his seat in the back, he explained. “The Overseer has been… detained. It appears we will have a bit of a wait. My apologies.”

“No worries. I’m sorted. What about you? You not going to wait inside the house?” Surely the Community’s Administrator should be able to wait in the Overseer’s mansion instead of out in the cold?

“No.” In the rear vision mirror, I saw one eyebrow quirk. “I have work I can do here.”

With that, he readjusted his computer and started working again. I figured since these guys seemed to have money to burn, I’d turn the car on and run the heater. Couldn’t see the point of the two of us freezing our butts off as Old Mate worked through his detention. I pulled out a copy of The Way and opened up to where I’d been reading last.

Val had cautioned me to keep up with me routine, even when I was away.

Especially when I was away.
