Chapter Ten

Dekker held Slade’s hand as they entered the arcade and walked to the back where the laser tag was located. At one a.m. the clientele was mostly twenty-somethings with alcohol on board. It was noisy and chaotic and perfect for Slade to unleash whatever emotions were plaguing him. It was also perfect for Dekker. He had a few pent-up emotions of his own. White-hot rage had lanced through his chest when he’d pulled into the parking lot and seen George holding Slade against the car. He didn’t even want to think about where that encounter might have led if he hadn’t shown up. They walked up to the counter, and Dekker reached for his wallet only to have his hand slapped away.

“Oh, hell no,” Slade said. “You said I could pay the next time, and this is the next time.”

Slade pulled his own wallet out and paid for two games for each of them. They were given buzzers that would alert them when their turn came up, which the attendant told them would only be about ten minutes. Dekker threaded his fingers through Slade’s again and led him toward a secluded table in the corner. Slade squeezed his hand and then pulled away toward the bar. He came back a few minutes later with two whiskeys on ice. They sat in silence, watching those around them and letting the whiskey calm their nerves. The buzzer vibrated across the table, and Dekker snapped it up. They polished off their drinks in one big gulp and headed toward the laser tag air lock. Once they were suited up and the rules had been given, the attendant moved to the door and opened it. Dekker and Slade followed behind six others into the darkened room on the other side. Slade pushed up against Dekker’s body and leaned in close to his ear.

“I’m going to hunt you down and nail your ass,” he whispered with a twinkle in his eye.

Dekker smiled at him, the double entendre received loud and clear. He blew Slade a kiss and then took off around a corner. And the game was on. Because of the low number of people wanting to play, their two twenty-minute games were back-to-back. Toward the middle of the second round, Slade grabbed him from behind and used him as a human shield against another player. Dekker laughed as Slade maneuvered him back and forth, popping out and shooting the others from around his body at random intervals. Dekker had long since lost his pack life, having taken too many hits, and just let Slade have his fun.

After a few minutes, the opponent’s attention was drawn by his girlfriend who started shooting at him from the second level. Slade pulled Dekker around a corner, slammed his back against the wall, and jumped him. The laser tag vests made it awkward as hell to get close, but Slade did his best. His hot lips and tongue feasted on Dekker’s mouth like the world would end when the sun rose.
