âIâve been thinking about how to keep you safe,â Faris said later over a huge stack of blueberry pancakes.
I blew on my coffee and looked around the Mom and Pop diner. âMm-hmm.â I wasnât paying attention to a word he was saying. Instead, I grappled with a fuzzy memory. âI think Iâve been here before.â
He poured the entire contents of the hot maple syrup jar on top of his breakfast. âProbably. Arthur used to like eating here.â
âYeah, he liked pancakes, too.â A bit of sadness dampened my good mood as I struggled to home in on that thread of forgotten past.
Faris cleared his throat. âEat your French Toast.â He pointed at my plate with his fork. I took a bite and raised my eyebrows in surprise. I chewed with a smile on my lips. The taste didnât bring back the memory, but it sure was heavenly familiar and comforting.
âIt occurred to me,â he continued the previous line of thought, âthat I should meet all your friends.â
âWait, what?â
âYou know, to keep an eye on them and . . . you,â he said as if it was the most reasonable thing in the world.
âNo. Thatâs not necessary.â
âWhy not? If I get to know them, it would help spot Zet if he tries to supplant them. It makes sense.â
I cut my French toast into tiny squares. The knife screeched against the plate.
âGo easy on the poor plate,â he said with a smirk.
âIt may make sense, but weâre not doing that.â I was emphatic.
He set his fork down, propped his elbows on the table and interlaced his fingers over the steaming pancakes. âYou still havenât given me a reason.â
âI donât know. Uh . . . it might be disruptive.â I grasped for a logical reason.
He seemed amused. âDisruptive?â
âYeah, I donât trust you not to . . . do mischief.â
A wholehearted laugh erupted from his mouth. âYou make me sound like a two-year-old.â
âWell, you do enjoy throwing people off with your tricks.â
âAnd by people you mean you.â He was serious now, eyes full of suggestive meaning. I avoided his dark gaze, acutely aware of the heat on my cheeks. âI promise you, in all seriousness, that Iâll behave.â
âYour promises are worth nothing to me.â I felt smug. He couldnât argue, not when heâd failed to keep his word several times already, not when I didnât know what happened with Mom. âSo no, you canât meet my friends. They donât need to know youâre there,â I finished.
He held my gaze for a few beats. His nostrils flared. âVery well,â he said curtly, turning his full attention back on breakfast, looking as if Iâd just slapped him. âI will continue to make myself invisible.â
âFaris, Iâm sorry. Thatâs not what I meant.â
âNo need for apologies,â he snapped. âI often forget my place.â He put twenty dollars on the table and stood. âTake your time. Iâll be waiting outside.â
My appetite gone, I abandoned my meal and went to the restroom. When I went out, he was standing by the Bugatti next to a man on a Harley.
