TWENTY-THREE

A MISSING SPIRITUALIST

Glenn felt a sudden chill. “You found a Desouled in the church library?”

“It emerged from deep within the stacks and snatched Miss Skygazer.” Arthur spoke quietly now, his features unusually grim. “I’d not have believed it had I not seen it with my own eyes, but it was a high level Desouled, one quite muscular and aged. Miss Skygazer stood not a chance against it. She struggled but was quickly subdued, while all I could do was—”

“Why didn’t you help her?” Glenn interrupted.

Arthur sighed. “My dear fellow, you’re obviously still quite young, so I’ll forgive your subtle slights regarding my bravery. The simple fact was that corpse was far higher level than both of us—”

“How could you tell?” Glenn interrupted.

Arthur’s carefree posture vanished. In a moment his features turned hard, and Glenn swallowed as he suddenly faced a man who was far less pleasant and friendly than Arthur Everglow. This man, as his eyes bored into Glenn’s, actually reminded him of the Shrike: the ruthless assassin he’d faced as a Town Guard a few months after the Gods granted his first Class.

“One can always tell.” Arthur’s low, raspy voice made Glenn cold.

This man now sounded so unlike the Arthur Everglow he’d grown to know that Glenn suspected they might be two different men entirely. They held each other’s stare for another moment. And then, in an eyeblink, the hard-faced killer who’d appeared in Glenn’s room vanished. That very dangerous man was once again replaced by the carefree and jovial Auracaster.

“Had I attacked that corpse, it would have killed me,” Arthur said calmly. “Moreover, it subdued Lucy rather than killing her. Even the two of us had no chance against a high level Desouled. I knew the only way to help her was to free her after the corpse departed, when its master was not expecting it.”

As Glenn mulled over Arthur’s story and actions, he knew Arthur was leaving out or lying about a good bit of this. Yet Glenn did that all the time, didn’t he?

The part of the story involving the library... the story about Lucy looking at tomes in the secrecy of night, then getting snatched up by a corpse far too powerful for either she or Arthur to defeat... that story felt real. Glenn heard the truth in Arthur’s words and tone. He heard a memory of frustration of helplessness, but moreover, a genuine worry for the life of Lucy Skygazer.

“You said you’re worried she’ll die of thirst or commit suicide,” Glenn said evenly. “Why?”

Arthur crossed his arms. “There’s no need to test my knowledge. I’m quite familiar with common interrogation methods.”

Glenn wasn’t, but he certainly wasn’t going to admit that right now. “Just answer the question.”

“Right, I suppose I must, if for no other reason than to assure you I’m not fishing about for Blazer secrets.” Arthur sighed. “When the Church of Celes encounters a difficult situation it cannot handle by normal methods, they often contract with the Shadowers Guild. The Guild, as you well know, employs Deathcasters.
