CHAPTER SEVEN

BLAZE

Thank fuck it’s stopped raining.

There are two issues with being out at night in the rain. One: it’s too fucking wet. Two: you can’t hear anything. Coughs, footsteps, breaths. All the sounds I listen out for on a nightly basis, trying to glean information that might lead me to my target.

It’s a safety thing too. You need to be able to hear someone sneaking up on you. Make sure you’re always the one doing the sneaking.

I’ve been in the shadows for nearly an hour now, and so far, I haven’t heard a peep.

My head is spinning, though.

I’ve just spent the evening trying to act normal with Luna, to put her at her ease. But ever since she told me her suspicions about someone being on her boat, I’ve been totally freaked. Don’t mind admitting that I even feel a little scared. Why the hell was Goldie on Luna’s boat tour today? And why did her cabin smell of smoke even before that?

If that guy’s been poking around her private home, that means she’s in danger. Real, mortal danger. He must have been either looking for something, or planting something. Or both.

Breaks my heart to think of poor Luna being wrapped up in all this. She’s so sweet, so innocent. And when she told me about her sister… Damn, she doesn’t deserve this. Seriously.

Sometimes I feel so useless, lurking here at the docks with so little information to go on. Taking photographs, trying to piece everything together. And for what? So the cops can tell me to get lost again?

I’m relieved Luna didn’t get too nosey in my flat earlier, or she’d have found all the photos and pen drives and files in my dresser. Makes for some creepy-ass reading. She might even have found my gun too. Luckily, I’ve got that on my person now. Never come out to the docks without it. Makes me feel safer knowing that I’ve got a means of defense, should I need it.

And obviously, if I see LeRoy, I know that I can end it all. An eye for an eye.

Literally.

Tonight, though, lurking in the shadows just isn’t doing it for me. Before I met Luna, I had time. Patience. I was a tiger. Ready to make my ambush only when it was the right time. After all, Ed’s already dead, you know? I could wait as long as it took to find the bad guys.

Not anymore.

I need to stop these guys and fast.

For one thing, Luna can’t sleep at my place forever. I can’t coddle her for the rest of her life. She’s not my Little.

And for another, whatever Goldie was up to today, there’s gonna be repercussions. These guys don’t get mixed up in your business and then leave you be. Luna is being tested somehow, and whether she passes or fails, I’m afraid the outcome could be the same…

Thing is, the dock isn’t just quiet tonight. It’s eerily quiet.

Like, normally, I see the odd shady character hurrying past with their hood up, or loitering on a corner waiting for god-knows what signal from someone else.
