There aren’t too many fancy restaurants in Orcas Island, but Cayson manages to take me to the best barbecue joint in town. After we devour a slab of ribs and an entire bottle of wine between us, I find myself clinging to him on our way out of the restaurant.

“All right,” Cayson says. “Where to next?”

I grin and squeeze the arm I’m holding on to. “Whitehorse.”

The next stare Cayson gives me is filled with suspicion. “The Whitehorse Pub?”

“Is that okay? You said I get to pick where we go next.”

He shrugs. “That’s fine. I just thought you were going to pick an activity, not a bar.”

I laugh. “I happen to know that there’s an event at Whitehorse tonight, and there will be a lot of people there. It’s time to try out some of your new moves, CayBear."

“And what new moves would those be?”

I growl at how frustrating he can be. “This isn’t football. I didn’t map you out a game plan. Use your newfound confidence to talk to some women.”

His brows furrow together. “So that’s it? You want me to talk to other women tonight?”

“Yes! Who knows? Maybe you’ll like someone enough to take them back to your place.”

Shock flashes on his face before his brow scrunches again like he’s thinking. “Just like that, huh?”

He may not be fully onboard, but it seems like he’s coming around. “Yup. Don’t worry. I’ll stick with you and coach you through it. C’mon, it will be fun.”

With a shake of his head, he opens the passenger door to let me in. “So let me get this straight. I’m supposed to hit on a bunch of women and then take one of them home. That’s my mission?”

I don’t miss the frustration in his question. “You don’t have to take anyone home. Your mission is to meet women. Talk to them, buy them drinks, flirt, laugh. Have fun. And if you happen to hit it off with someone, then you at least have the experience to start messing around a little. Only if you like her,” I remind him, really hoping he doesn’t forget that part of the instructions.

He seems to be considering this thought while he leans in, backing me up against the car, and then places this hand on the top edge of the roof. “But…” He chews on his bottom lip. “What if I like her a lot? I bring her back to my place and then what?”

He searches my eyes like he’s eager to know what I think, but suddenly I don’t want to elaborate. “I don’t know. Ask her if she wants to watch a movie? Sit real close and—”

“Cuddle?”

He looks so completely intrigued by this imaginary scenario that I’m beginning to feel uncomfortable.

I stifle a laugh. “I would just do what feels natural. If you’re really into her, then sure, you can cuddle.”

He twists his lip, still in deep thought. “What if cuddling leads to more? Like… we start kissing, and then she rubs up against me so I start peeling off her clothes.
