When we rejoin the convoy, Allegre goes to hitch the pickup to Julia’s trailer. Salazar leads our little group to Rincón’s caravan. The matador steps from the door to greet us.

Rincón, straight and aristocratic as ever, shakes hands with Takigawa and Ballard. When he comes to Heth, he tilts his head with courtesy. He is wearing a black chaleco jacket with gold embroidery, and a flat-topped gaucho hat with a wide brim.

“Ah, Ms Crockett. Charmed.”

The maestro’s manner completely disarms the girl. “Call me Heth. Are you the bullfighter?”

“That is my profession, yes. I think of it as an art.”

“I want to see you fight.”

“I would be honored if you would come to the Maestranza on Sunday.”

“I’d love to.”

“Salazar will see to it that you all have tickets. The best, at the barrera, in the shade.”

We go inside the caravan. Rincón hangs his hat on a hook on the wall.

“Maestro, Takigawa and Ballard are here to help,” I tell the matador. “We’ll be safer if Leandro and The Basque try anything. As soon as we arrange a safe house in Seville, we’ll get out of your hair. You’ve risked enough for us.”

“Nonsense,” Rincón says. “Your plans are your own, of course. But please… stay at my ranch over Semana Santa. Until the corrida.”

Heth looks at me with a pleading expression.

“If we won’t put you out.”

“Not at all.”

Rincón turns to Salazar. “It is settled, then. We will arrive at the ranch by noon. You shall have rooms in La Casa Grande.”

“Your men know we’ve encountered problems,” I say.

“Yes.”

“Please spread the word that my friends and I will be carrying weapons. We will not be obtrusive, but I want everyone to understand. They are here to protect us and Julia.”

Takigawa and Ballard open their duffels and lay their weapons on the table. Two M4 carbines and one long-barreled AR-15. The AR-15 is equipped with a bipod, Picatinny rail, and a Steiner 3x-15x variable power scope with a first focal plane reticle.

“We didn’t know what you’d need,” Takigawa says.

“Three to ten times should be plenty.” I look at Heth. “Want to zero it for us tomorrow morning?”

“I want to learn about bullfighting.”

“Bullfighting is not for everyone,” Rincón says. “Perhaps we can test you against some of our calves. Try your hand at a beccerada.”

“What’s that?”

“A bullfight against young bulls.”

“I’m in.”

“We practice in the afternoon.” Rincón’s approach is smooth as butter. “That leaves you the morning to calibrate your rifle.”

Takigawa sets three Heckler & Koch Mark 23 semiautomatic pistols on the table. A leather bag contains suppressors.

“Will you run suppressed?” Takigawa asks.

“I won’t, but you guys should zero one of them with a suppressor.”

“I’ll do mine in the morning.”

Most people are not aware that mounting a suppressor affects a pistol’s shot placement. The harmonics of a pistol are affected much more than those of a rifle. At distances as short as ten feet, a pistol’s sights must be re-aligned when a suppressor is attached.

I take one of the Mark 23s. Do a three-point check and insert a magazine.
