The woman in the burqa was watching from the doorway of her cottage. Her husband had returned, tired and irritable, and she assumed things hadn’t gone the way he’d planned. She served him with a hot meal and fresh coffee, helped him remove his clothes, and washed the dust and perspiration from his body. He dismissed her and went to bed, tired after his exertions, but she felt restless. Something had happened, and she sensed it was important, perhaps critical.
She strolled outside the cottage and stepped back as men strolled past. They were leading prisoners, Westerners. Out of curiosity she followed them to the hospital cave. They disappeared inside, and she once more hid in the shadows. Another man came, another Westerner, and something about him was familiar. She saw him collapse as a guard came across him and clubbed him with his rifle.
She wanted to do something, but she’d been out too long. Her husband may awake at any moment, so ran back to her home. He was still asleep, snoring heavily, and she lay down on the rug in the living room, her designated sleeping space. He’d made it clear she wasn’t to disturb him once he’d fallen asleep. If he needed her he’d call for her.
Slumber evaded her for a long time. Those Westerners intrigued her, especially the man in the long, black leather coat. She’d seen him before somewhere, long ago, but she couldn’t remember where, or who he was. She was still awake, her brain chewing at the problem when the first light of dawn showed through the glassless windows. Wearily, she began to prepare for the coming day. She must make sure everything was perfect. The rage of her husband was too much to risk. Once, she’d even thought about putting a bullet in him from the Tokarev she kept under her robe, but she never did. If she failed to kill him, if he survived, he’d roast her over a slow fire. He wasn’t a merciful man.
After the long years of isolation and misery, she had a single consolation. She never became pregnant, despite her husband’s insistence it was her duty to bear him a son. She’d trained as a nurse, and she knew how to make sure it never happened. He’d been suspicious at first, but when she hinted it might be because he was infertile, he stopped berating her about it. As she went about her morning chores, she thought again about those Westerners she’d seen taken to the hospital cave. And she made a decision.
